Abu Dhabi TII advances edge AI for drones
Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute is adapting its SADEED platform to bring predictive maintenance directly onboard cargo drones and future eVTOL aircraft.
According to the official TII announcement, the work is supported by Qualcomm’s Tech for Good Grant. TII is the first organization in the Middle East to receive the grant.
The project will adapt SADEED to Qualcomm’s Dragonwing IQ9 edge AI processor. The technology is intended to allow cargo drones and future eVTOL aircraft to monitor safety-critical systems onboard without relying on continuous cloud connectivity.
SADEED can detect early signs of component degradation while processing safety-critical data onboard without continuous cloud connectivity.
AI analysis moves onboard
By running the analysis onboard, aircraft do not need continuous cloud connectivity to monitor safety-critical systems.
This could support faster local analysis and condition-based maintenance for drones and future eVTOL aircraft.
SADEED builds on more than two years of research by TII’s AI Diagnostics and Prognostics team. The project now moves the platform closer to real-world onboard deployment.
The project also supports TII’s wider work on Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Air Mobility ecosystem and future UAE air corridors.
