The City of Carmel, in the American state of Indiana, has deployed Genetec Security Center across more than 40 municipal sites. The unified platform helps city departments coordinate security, emergency response and daily operations.
According to the official Genetec case study, public safety teams can monitor video, alarms, emergency calls, response vehicles and IoT sensors through an interactive city map. First responders can also access this information from mobile devices.
The system proved useful when a rare tornado struck Carmel. City teams mapped the storm’s path, assessed damage and identified the hardest-hit areas. They then directed emergency responders, utility crews and public works resources to the affected locations.
Unified security supports city operations
Carmel also uses Security Center to support municipal services beyond public safety. Engineering and street teams can monitor road conditions, coordinate snow removal and manage traffic during construction detours.
Meanwhile, parks teams monitor crowd levels, facility usage and safety at the city’s waterpark and trails. Public events teams also use the platform to monitor pedestrian traffic in community plazas and during gatherings.
By bringing all our departments onto one city-wide platform, we’ve reduced complexity. The result is better decisions for our community, higher response efficiency, and more cost-effective operations that benefit our residents.
– Morgan Rinehart, Network Architect at the City of Carmel
The platform gives Carmel’s IT team a centralized view of system health. Teams can monitor connected devices, identify potential vulnerabilities and review cybersecurity information. They can also manage firmware and software updates.
Hybrid security infrastructure adds flexibility
Carmel combines its existing security infrastructure with the cloud-based Genetec Security Center SaaS platform. This hybrid approach allows the city to deploy mobile cameras when temporary projects or major events require additional video coverage. The city can also connect with systems operated by local schools, sports organizations and critical infrastructure partners.
Looking ahead, Carmel plans to integrate more systems and community partners as its smart city initiatives develop. The open platform allows the city to expand its capabilities while maintaining a consistent approach to security and operations.
